The story behind

The monsters were never under the bed.

For half a century, Stephen King has kept the same quiet vigil: sitting before a typewriter, listening to the things the rest of us pretend not to hear. This portrait finds him there — glasses low, gaze steady — held inside a Victorian oval like a daguerreotype of a man who has seen Derry from the inside. Every shadow in his face is built from crossed lines of ink, the way his towns are built from crossed lives.

Look closer at the typewriter. There is a page still in the roller, and on it, a note — hand-lettered, small enough to miss: “The scariest monsters are the ones that lurk inside us.” It is the only sentence in the drawing, and it is the whole drawing.

The process

Each piece begins with an archival fineliner and weeks of hatching — thousands of intersecting strokes laid down one at a time, with no undo and no layers. There is no tablet and no filter at any stage of the original: heavyweight cotton paper, permanent lightfast ink. What you see is exactly what the pen left behind.

The original pieces are drawn in 100% cotton paper 300gsm, and the fine art prints are made on archival cotton paper designed to last for decades without fading.
