Beneath the Rose

Sub rosa. In ancient Rome, a rose hung over a table meant one thing: everything spoken beneath it was secret, and would remain so. The rose became the quietest symbol in Europe — carved into confessionals, painted onto ceilings of council rooms, pressed into the wax of sealed letters. A flower standing guard over words.

This is Rosslyn Chapel, and the spiralling column is its most famous secret: the Apprentice Pillar. Legend says the master mason travelled abroad to study the original he was meant to copy — and returned to find his apprentice had already carved this, guided by a dream. The master killed him with a single blow of his mallet. Among the chapel's thousand carvings, a small stone face is said to watch the pillar still: the apprentice, keeping an eye on his work forever.

In the drawing, a man sits in the shadow beside the doorway, head bowed — listening, perhaps, to what the stone remembers.
