The story behind

In Edinburgh, the owl never flew alone.

Below Edinburgh Castle, at the top of the Royal Mile, a small iron fountain marks the Witches' Well. It stands where hundreds of women accused of witchcraft were burned, centuries ago. The city still remembers them there.

In those years, people believed the owl flew with the witches. Some even said a witch could take its shape and watch the town from the rooftops at night. This owl sits on a postcard sent from Edinburgh in May 1902, above a lane that winds down from the castle. She does not look at the street. She looks at you.

Look into her eyes. She is looking back.

Edinburgh, 9 PM, 12 May 1902 — lettered by hand.

Agus Sánchez drawing with an archival fineliner, gloved hand over hatched ink lines

The process

Drawn by hand. Nothing digital.

Each piece begins with an archival fineliner and around twelve hours of hatching — thousands of intersecting strokes laid down one at a time, with no undo and no layers. There is no tablet and no filter at any stage of the original: heavyweight cotton paper, permanent lightfast ink. What you see is exactly what the pen left behind.
